Before we start, let's understand the term "Llama." In this context, it's not the four-legged, woolly animal. Here, Llama is a groundbreaking family of large language models (LLMs) introduced by Meta AI in February 2023. Inspired by the vast potential of LLaMA, Others started making one for their own mother tongue.Abhinand Balachandran got curious when he saw the success of the Chinese Llama Alpaca. Chinese is known for its intricate grammar. Yet, if the LLaMA team could crack it, Balachandran believed Indian languages could follow suit. He recalls thinking, "Chinese is a bit of a complex language, but if they can make it work for Chinese, then surely we will also be able to make it work for Indian languages, right? So that was the motivation." And that's how the journey to create தமிழ் Llama began.
